Natural beauty

One of my new favorite "green" websites to get updates from is White Apricot.com. They feature everything an eco conscientious girl could want, from the cutest vegan linen flats, organic and hemp derived clothes, to the coolest natural and recycled jewelry. I get a kick out of their "Seriously?" section, where they review ridiculous "natural" products on the market like edible shoe polish and the cardboard bike!
Although some of the items they feature can be a bit pricey, I enjoy the fact they showcase creative designers from etsy.com and offer promotional discounts to shoppers. I'm always looking for great websites to inspire me to live a greener life...if you have one to share, drop us a line!
Our Gardens, Ourselves

It’s the unofficial start to summer and gardening time is upon us. Come in to Chi Wah Organica for all your gardening needs! Yes, you read that correctly. While elbow deep in dirt this past weekend, lost in thought, I was struck by the similarities of maintaining my gardens and maintaining my hair. Allow me to explain.
A beautiful garden starts with a well planted garden bed. Without proper nutrients in the soil and good aeration, the plants can’t thrive. The same holds true for beautiful hair. The scalp needs stimulation, exfoliation and correct ph balance to support healthy locks. The best hairstyles in the world will not look good if the scalp is not healthy. Aveda’s Scalp Benefits shampoo and conditioner are the perfect solution!
And then there is the weeding issue. Attractive plants cannot show off in a weedy garden. The weeds distract the eye and take over space. The beauty of the flowers gets lost. Well…unwanted gray hairs are definite weeds in my hair that need regular attention. Dull split ends, uneven color, environmental toxins- all WEEDS! Traces of medicines we ingest often end up as “weeds” in our hair as well. Are YOU due for a weeding?
After my garden bed is stable and the weeds are at bay, my garden still needs “deadheading’ and pruning. This is often the hardest for me. I find it difficult to do that aggressive cutting back that encourages growth and ultimately results in bigger, healthier plants. This is so true for hair as well. How many times have you heard someone say that they are not cutting their hair because they are growing it long, but what you see is hair that is compromised by straggly, tired ends begging to be trimmed? Even the best of styles need to be reshaped regularly to keep them manageable and looking good.
Chi Wah, Salena and Erica are all talented “gardeners” who are eager to help!
Finally, I love variety in my garden. Planting flowers in complimentary colors perks me up and makes me feel good. If it works in the garden….Why not enhance your appearance with a rich new color or complementary highlights in your hair? It just might perk YOU up!
Maybe if Mary, of Nursery rhyme garden fame, had visited Chi Wah Organica for her hair care needs, she wouldn’t have been so contrary!
Enjoy your gardens!

Erica's learning experience

I recently had the opportunity to attended Aveda's Pure Form workshop with Steve Royster. As an educator in the Aveda Network, he set himself apart in every way. He was patient with every stylist, whether it was someone "new" to the Aveda cutting styles, or teaching an old dog new tricks.
For me, it was breaking down each haircut into scissor positioning, body positioning; and how this affected the haircut when I strayed right or left. This class was very mind-freeing. Steve showed me how to step out of the box and the normalcy of day to day, to see shapes on top of other shapes, and breaking down each haircut.
Everyday I put something into play of the techniques that Steve taught to us. I have taken this class once before, a few years back, early on in my career. I think because I was newer to the industry that the tools given did not truly "sink in", as it did for me last month. Now that I have made common mistakes, and realize how to prevent them from happening, I can better myself in the skill of haircutting. I'm looking forward to learning and growing within the Aveda Network and my home of Chi Wah Organica. I'm always in search of ways to improve my skills, this class proved to be exactly what the doctor ordered.
